Ceiling Repair in Bayonne

A crack over the bed or a brown ring by the light fixture rarely fixes itself. We repair ceiling drywall and plaster, match the texture and leave a clean work area. You get a clear plan and a written price before we start.

When your ceiling needs repair

A ceiling does not fail the way a wall does. Gravity pulls on it all the time, so a loose joint or a damp patch only gets worse. Tape peels, fasteners push out, and board that got wet begins to droop between the joists.

Most ceiling problems leave you room to plan. A fine crack or an old, dry stain can go on the calendar for a quiet week and into the budget. A ceiling that feels soft, sags or is still wet should be handled soon. We tell you which kind you have so you can schedule the work instead of scrambling.

When the work grows past one ceiling, such as whole rooms needing new board, it falls under drywall hanging. Small holes in walls are handled under drywall patching.

What the work includes

Crack and seam repair
We cut out failed tape, re-secure the board to the framing and retape the joint. Then we build it back up with compound so the crack does not telegraph through again.
Water stain and damage repair
Once the leak itself is fixed, we check the drywall for softness and moisture. Sound board gets a stain-blocking primer. Damaged board gets cut out and replaced back to solid framing.
Sagging drywall
We find out why it is sagging first. Sometimes it needs more screws. Sometimes the board is too far gone and a section has to come down and go back up.
Popped nails and screws
We drive in new screws beside the popped fastener, set the old one, and finish over both. A quick fix that stops the little round bumps from coming back.
Texture matching
Knockdown, orange peel, sand swirl or a smooth finish. We test the pattern on a scrap piece before it goes on your ceiling.
Paint touch-up on the repair
We prime the repaired area and touch up the patch so it blends. Our paint touch-ups service covers this in more detail.

Signs your ceiling needs attention

  • A crack that keeps growing

Mark the ends with a pencil. If it is longer in a month, the tape or board is moving and needs repair.

  • Brown or yellow rings

A stain means water got in at some point. Even if it is dry now, the drywall paper may be weak behind it.

  • Bowing between joists

If you can see a dip when you look across the ceiling with a light on, the board is pulling away. Plan this one soon.

  • Rows of small bumps

Nail pops usually show up in lines along the framing. They are easy to fix and cheaper to do in one visit.

  • Peeling tape at a seam

A long straight line where paper is lifting is a failed joint. It often shows up in bathrooms and top floors where humid summers are hard on ceilings.

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Look and explain

We look at the ceiling, check for moisture and find the cause. You hear what we found and what we suggest, in plain words.

  2. 2

    Written estimate

You get a line-item price for the repair. If something can wait, we say so, so you can plan it into a later month.

  3. 3

    Protect the room

We cover floors and furniture with drop cloths and plastic. Ceiling work drops dust straight down, so this step matters more than on a wall.

  4. 4

    Repair, finish and sand

We fix the board, tape and apply compound in coats. Each coat dries before the next. Then we sand, match the texture and prime.

  5. 5

    Clean up and walk through

We vacuum, pull the plastic and look at the repair with you in good light. If something bothers you, we deal with it while we are there.

What moves the price

Ceiling repair is priced by the job, not by a flat rate. Two cracks the same length can cost different amounts depending on what is behind them. We give you a written number after we see the ceiling.

Size and number of repairs
One stain costs less than four. Grouping small repairs into one visit saves you money on setup and drying time.
What is under the surface
Dry, solid drywall just needs refinishing. Wet or crumbling board has to come out, which adds material and time.
Ceiling height and access
Stairwells and tall ceilings need taller ladders or staging. Furniture we have to work around also adds time.
Texture type
Smooth ceilings need extra sanding to hide a repair. Textured ceilings need matching, which takes testing and care.
Plaster or drywall
Many older homes in the area still have plaster ceilings. Repairing plaster is slower than drywall, and we price it that way.

Ceiling repair questions

Something not covered here? (201) 584-5880

Can you fix the ceiling before the leak is fixed?

No, and we would not want to. A new patch over an active leak will stain and sag again. Get the leak repaired first, let the area dry, then call us and we will plan the ceiling work.

Will the repair show?

Our goal is a repair you have to hunt for. We match the texture and prime and touch up the patch. On an old ceiling with faded paint, the patch can look a little fresher than the rest, and we tell you that up front.

How long does a ceiling repair take?

Small cracks and nail pops are often done in one visit. Larger patches need time for compound to dry between coats, so they may take two or three short visits. We tell you the schedule before we start.

How messy is it?

Ceiling work makes dust, and it falls down. We cover the floor and furniture, close off the room with plastic when needed, and vacuum before we leave.

Should I fix a small crack now or wait?

A hairline crack can wait if it is not growing. But small repairs are cheaper, and doing a few at once saves on setup. Many people bundle ceiling cracks with other drywall repair around the house.
